Jomtien is a section of Pattaya, a city in Thailand, located on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand about 165 km southeast of Bangkok in the province of ChonBuri. It is located about 3 km south of South Pattaya and is home to many high-rise condominiums, beach-side hotels, beaches and restaurants.

The popular Jomtien Beach is know for its water sports (jet skis, para sailing, scuba diving) and for several annual sponsored events and festivals, attracting visitors from around the world. Equally popular is Dong Tan Beach with its many sections of colorful umbrellas. There are several high end resorts along the beaches, including the Rabbit Resort and the Avalon Beach Resort. Dong Tan is also quite popular with gay men from around the world.

There has been a construction boom in the last several years with many new condominiums as well as housing developments in the Jomtien area as it has become quite popular with Bangkokians seeking a second home and retired expats who are trying to escape the noise and sex scene of Pattaya proper. Among the new projects is Ocean 1, which when completed at 91 stories will be one of the tallest residential buildings in the world.

The Jomtien Complex, which includes a large group of shop-houses, has recently seen a phenomenal growth as well after many years of standing vacant. The complex now features many restaurants, bars and stores of all kinds. It has also become a gay destination, featuring numerous gay bars, restaurants and boutique hotels.

A recent trend has been the opening of many upscale restaurants along Thappraya Road, the main thoroughfare connecting Pattaya and Jomtien. Newly christened "Restaurant Row" by some locals, the area includes Bruno's, Mata Hari, Manhattans Steakhouse, Indian By Nature and the Italian Restaurant Pan Pan which is next to Expat Car Rent.

Jomtien Beach

Jomtien Beach (Thai: หาดจอมเทียน) is divided from the main part of Pattaya by Pratumnak Hill, just south of the city. In contrast to Pattaya Beach, Jomtien is a popular spot for family vacationers and water sports enthusiasts.

Jomtien is essentially a residential area with beach-side hotels, bungalow complexes, condominiums and restaurants. A wide array of water-sport activities can be found, including jet skis, para-sailing and small sail boat (Hobie Cat) rental.

Dongtan Beach, just past the Avalon Beach Resort in Jomtien, is known as the gay beach, and is busy every day of the year. It is very popular location for vendors of all types to solicit their services or goods.

Jomtien's most visible landmark is the 56-story Pattaya Park tower, part of the Pattaya Park entertainment complex which also features a water park, roller coaster, monorail and children's activities. This may soon be overshadowed by the proposed 91-floor Ocean 1 ("O1") Tower.

With an overall height of 367 meters, it would be the tallest building in Thailand and one of the tallest residential buildings in the world. The Jomtien district is already home to one of the largest resorts in Asia, the 4000+ room Ambassador City Jomtien.

Jomtien beach can be reached by songthaew taxi. There is a direct route or a switch Songthaew at the 2nd road intersection near walking street. Songthaew fares from within Pattaya to Jomtien will be 20 baht for foreigner person while Thai people only need to pay 10 baht for the same ride. A motorbike taxi will take people there for 60 baht.

In and around Jomtien

The real estate business has been growing in Jomtien and Pattaya for many years and still is growing. If you spend more than a few months away from here then you will hardly recognize the neighbourhood when you do return. This has happened to me on a few occasions and I find this to be one of the most intriguing happenings here in Jomtien.
